Open from Sat 22 Nov – Sun 29 Mar 2026.

Whai Wāhi emerges as a contribution to contemporary discourse around Te Tiriti o Waitangi as a living document. For artists, among others, Te Tiriti continues to be a primary reference in the collective negotiation of identity and relationships in Aotearoa.

The exhibition features new commissions by contemporary artists Madison Kelly (Kāi Tahu, Kāti Mamoe, Pākehā) and Melanie Tangaere Baldwin (Ngāti Porou); work by Robyn Kahukiwa from Ngā Puhipuhi o Te Herenga Waka–Victoria University of Wellington Art Collection and other key works including the Treaty panels redacted by Te Waka Hourua collective, loaned for the occasion.

Extending beyond Aotearoa to acknowledge the solidarity between Indigenous peoples are moving image works by Sky Hopinka (Ho-Chunk Nation/ Pechanga Band of Luiseño Indians) and Inas Halabi (Palestine), which articulate related acts and artistic languages of powerful resistance to colonial disenfranchisement of people from their land.

Ka tūhuratia Te Tiriti o Waitangi hei tuhinga ora, ā, e whakaaturia ana ngā mahi hou a Madison Kelly (nō Kāi Tahu, Kāti Mamoe, Pākehā) rāua ko Melanie Tangaere Baldwin (nō Ngāti Porou), me ngā mahi a Robyn Kahukiwa rātou ko Emily Karaka, ko Kura Te Waru Rewiri, me Te Waka Hourua. Hei āpiti ki ngā mahi ataata o te ao, ka aro tēnei whakaaturanga ki te kotahitanga o ngā iwi taketake me te ātete auaha i te tāmi.
