Kirikiriroa Hamilton born, Melbourne-based, Richard Lewer’s artwork investigates difficult subjects or probes extreme behaviour.

For What they didn’t teach us in school, Lewer has created a new body of work derived from his personal journey as a Pākehā learning about the Waikato Wars.

Like many New Zealanders, Lewer wasn’t taught about the New Zealand Wars at school. He feels it’s important to acknowledge and digest what happened, to help understand our colonial history. Lewer believes this is his most important artwork series, as he develops an understanding of the history of the place he comes from and his place within it.
